On Saturday night, we pondered the possibilities around what might happen if the State of Texas were ever to secede from the United States.
This was the text of the question…
“Presuming that Texas would be the most likely state to seceded from the United States…if such a thing ever did occur…how do you think they'd do on their own, and what do you think their biggest concern would be?”
The answers ran pretty much how I expected they would, with most people saying Texas would do okay, and giving reasons why they thought so. I would agree with that in general, with some caveats.
But the “experimental" part of this was me watching for something to come up in the comments, which didn't, because we invariably look at this purely hypothetical scenario from one perspective only, the relationship between the U.S. and Texas, without allowing any ‘outliers' into the mix.
The thing I was looking for is this, which maybe seems crazy but maybe not, and then I'll hand it back over to you…
What if a year after Texas seceded, and they're doing fine and working things out, Mexico decides to “reclaim” that territory and makes a military play against them?
Mexico's still pretty pissed off about how those previous wars turned out. They feel they have an historical, if not legal claim to that land. There is undeniably some sentiment toward that in the Mexican population, which would blossom if their people saw a real possibility of it working. And Mexico couldn't hope for better time and opportunity, while the sovereign nation of Texas is new and still trying to get their feet under their asses…and are without the might of the United States military backing them.
That could go really, really badly for Texas.
I'm not saying all of what I think now, except that I think Texas potentially could stand up to that, but like I said about the other thing, there would be caveats.
So take what you thought from the poll on Saturday, add this “hypothetical" into the mix, and tell me how you think that scenario plays out.
Aaaaaaaand…
Go!
I’m with Mary Ann. There are a lot of gun owners in Texas.
If it came to actual war I think Texans could put up one hell of a fight. And even though the "official" US military wouldn't help, I bet there's a lot of people that would not want to see TX overrun by Mexico and would lend a hand.
