Taking a little deeper look into the OceanGate debacle from last week in the aftermath of it, and based upon the overwhelming sentiment expressed by experts in the videos & articles I've been looking at I can tell you three things that I believe to be true about former OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush.
One... That asshole thought he was a billionaire Huckleberry Finn cobbling together a raft out of scraps. Like he took pleasure in the fact that he cut corners and broke rules in designing this comparatively shabby "backyard hobby" diving craft. I don't know anything about that extreme level of deep submersible diving, but I know enough about how the ocean works that once I looked around inside that tub for about five minutes, there's no way I'd have gone under the surface in it.
Two... If you believe nothing else I say, trust my expert first hand experience on this one when I say that Stockton Rush was a pathological contrarian. Virtually every deep-sea submersible 'expert' there is told this man what he was doing was wrong and would end up catastrophically. And he wouldn't listen, and he did it anyway, and it did. That's a textbook path-con, right down to the typical conclusion.
Three... If Stockton Rush wasn't killed in his boat, he should absolutely have been arrested and criminally charged with whatever the closest thing to "negligent homocide" is at some point. It was unconscionable that this man took people down to the Titanic in that silly thing. It was unconscionable that he even asked them to sign waivers/releases.

Hopefully the family members sue and get every last dime that “company” has. They admitted, hell they bragged about, not hiring the most competent old, white guy submariners, diversity was more important. That video should negate any releases signed and allow the families to sue the company and individual employees.
I saw an interview with a guy who took a trip on it last year and returned successfully to the surface. He called it a "kamikaze mission".
Also,,, an interesting tidbit of trivia.... the wife of the now deceased OceanGate CEO is the great-great-granddaughter of Isidor and Ida Strauss, two of the wealthiest passengers who perished when Titanic went down. So her ancestors and her husband died at sea at the same location. Spooky.
Glen really nailed it - have been so angry that the CEO was such an arrogant and evil individual. The 19 year old, according to his aunt, was terrified but it was Father’s Day and he went. So sad
Yes, he really did nail it! He has a gift for hitting things where they should be hit.
Very sad....unimaginable tragedy for the families...God help them.
Horrid how this was handled. I told my husband today that all the crap going on now makes Sodom and Gomorrah look like a brownie sundae...such disregard for human life
Sometimes we think people who have a lot of money are smart. Not these gazillionaires who decided to join Gilligan on this hapless adventure. I don't know how many waivers you need to sign to protect someone from a wrongful death lawsuit - but late night TV is full of advertisements for slip and fall lawyers who are probably chomping at the bit for the chance to test that limit. Let the lawsuits begin!
I feel the worst for the youngest victim. He was only 19 and probably went because his father thought it would be safe. No amount of money will replace the lives lost.
I saw the owner talking about how he put that craft together, bragging on himself. Horrible
Stupid is as stupid does!!!!!
I cannot disagree. It's a travesty any way you look at it.
The co-founder is still alive. I wonder what’s going to happen to him?
