It's a failure in that they're coming at McCarthy all guns blazing, but with no viable alternative to offer. They're just throwing shit against the wall to see what sticks, nominating people who clearly said they're not interested and people nobody even knows. You are correct, the dems would have been locked in a room until an agreement was reached, but then, again, no dem would step that far out of line in the first place. The speaker of the house does not need to be a member of congress and if the GOP really wanted to stick it in the dems face they would elect Trump - OMG what a chaos that would be.
