Have you heard anything about 4 horses either dying or being put down right before the Derby? I saw the one horse who was entered had to be put down a few days ago. Then early today I saw a headline saying 4 have died. I didn't read the article, and when I went back to look for it, it was gone.
What I'm hearing is that most of this traces back to one trainer, who had two horses die. They're saying both of them had to be put down due to unknown injuries, and they scratched all of this trainer's horses from every race they were scheduled to run in and suspended the guy pending investigation. The guy's logical argument is that he's run 3800 horses and never had this happen, and both happened the same day on the Churchill Downs track, which is a pretty fair point.
So I presume there are autopsies and investigations in play, and even if they knew everything right now, they wouldn't say anything until Monday anyway. But, I'd guess there will be some answers at some point.
The morality and ethics aspect of horse racing is an open debate, with a wide spectrum of valid opinions.
But from a business perspective, these are not $19.99 parakeets you buy at Petco. They're in some cases million dollar animals, and it's highly unlikely that any owner would intentionally risk harm to their investment, and I always try to keep that in mind when these things happen. Maybe a trainer trying to earn his keep is a different story, but I want to know more before I start pointing fingers.
Thanks again. I have some family that are involved in raising horses and it's outrageously expensive. When you get to the horses that have the talent to compete on the elite level of the Triple Crown, you need a group of investors to purchase a promising animal. Especially if the bloodline includes past champions. The old saying "breeding tells" is practically gospel in the thoroughbred industry. So I completely agree with your analysis. As far as the ethics and morality aspects go, every sport has those who will seek any advantage to increase their performance. For instance, before steroids became common, baseball players would sometimes use cork in their bats or as one Hall of Fame pitcher once said: "I knew it was time to retire when they started hitting the dry side of the ball."
I read that 2 were injured while running on the track and had to be euthanized, and one died right after a race. Didn't hear details on the fourth. Two had the same owner, but not sure which 2.
I believe Harry is attending the coronation by himself. Wouldn't it be a hoot if Meghan was seen in full hatted regalia partying at the Derby.
You should see what they think of Americans. They’re still salty about that whole 1776 thing
Maybe that’s why he got rid of his mothers&a secretary/dresser/letter writer/whatever.

Bad week for Twin Spires. 😔

Appreciate it! It's a shame to lose beautiful animals like that.
That makes me sick and mad as hell. I hadn't heard that Medina had died😪

Thanks.
Anyone remember a horse named "Ruffian"?
